Artist Statement

The type of photography that I enjoy the most is darkroom photography. I like darkroom photography because you never know how it is going to turn out. I enjoy the process of putting the paper in the developer and seeing the image begin to appear. You can also do so much under the light that can make your image look even better than it did before. I think that having to go through the process of loading film into the camera and changing each of the numbers can lead you to loving your image more because you are proud of the hard work you put in.

In this course, I learned how to take pictures properly with a focus point. I would also use my phone to take photos of things that looked pretty and the phone did all the work for me. I learned all the basics of photography and the parts of the camera. Now, I know how to take pictures that look even better than any phone could take. I learned how the image gets to the film when the lens opens and about the mirrors and reflections to see the image in the viewfinder. I also learned how to find a good focus point and I learned about the rule of thirds and many other techniques that can enhance the photo quality.

My work has changed tremendously through taking this course, for example the difference between my first roll of film and my second. My first roll only about 10 pictures turned, and the ones that did were blurry and dark. I didn't really take pictures of interesting things and my photos were pretty boring. My second roll was much better, some of the photos were blurry but I had a lot that turned out. The photos were more exciting and all tied into the same theme. Between the first and second rolls I learned all about apertureshutter-speed, and ISO. I learned how to use a light meter and how to focus images properly so that they would not appear blurry.

For future work, I hope to make complete rolls of film that all of the pictures to all be in the right focus and for them not to be too dark. I also hope to learn more about different types of photography and try new things. I would also love to learn new techniques on photoshop to make my images blend more. I think that I would also like to try digital photography and learn the basics of a digital camera.
